Rolf Hay discovers Danish design not in Denmark, but in Cologne, at the IMM fair—a revelation. In 2002, with Mette Hay (formerly of Gubi) and the support of Anders Holch Povlsen, founder of Bestseller, they launch HAY in Horsens, Denmark. The ambition: to reinvent the legacy of Scandinavian design from the 1950s and 1960s—functional, pared back, accessible—for today’s everyday life. First collection at the Cologne fair in 2003. Collaborations with the Bouroullec brothers, Hee Welling, Muller Van Severen, George Sowden, Ana Kraš. Bold colors as a signature.
