This brand completely won me over. Hereu means "heir" in Catalan—a name chosen with care. Since 2014, Mallorca-born Albert Escribano and Valencia-born José Luis Bartolomé have mined the traditional Spanish wardrobe, reimagining espadrilles, loafers, and fisherman sandals.
Their very first collection, originally designed for men, reimagined traditional Majorcan shoes like porqueras and fraileras. Upon receiving the prototypes, they realized they worked just as beautifully for women, almost accidentally beginning to build a unisex wardrobe.
The Pesca carries this logic right to the water's edge. Directly inspired by the work shoes once worn by fishermen along the Mediterranean coast, it features signature cut-outs designed to let the foot breathe. HEREU reconstructs it with interlocking panels of full-grain calfskin, their edges painted using traditional leatherworking techniques. It is still crafted in Spain by a small team of artisans.
Since 2014, the founders have collaborated with a network of family-run Spanish workshops, some passing down their craft for generations; their partner tannery in Padrón, Galicia, has been working leather since the 1870s.
