On my own, I decide quickly. Friday night dinner? Settled in two minutes. Yet other decisions escape me entirely the moment I sit across from someone I love.
When do we say "I love you" for the very first time?
Before dinner, risking two hours of analyzing their reaction? Between courses, as if it were nothing? After the second glass of wine, risking that the glass itself takes the blame? Or must we wait for dessert, so three little words can finally slip into the conversation?
To conduct the experiment, meet at Le Cheval d’Or, at 21 rue de la Villette, in Jourdain. Behind the red facade of this former Chinese bistro, Hanz Gueco, Luis Andrade, Crislaine Medina, and Nadim Smair have designed a restaurant that beautifully blurs the lines: a Parisian sino-bistrot where Chinese heritage meets French culinary technique.
Plates arrive at the center of the table, meant for sharing. Rice gnocchi, foie gras char siu, tortellini meeting mapo tofu, or playful takes on the scallion pancake: the kitchen travels freely between worlds. In the minimalist space designed by Ciguë, dishes are passed, bites are stolen, and somewhere between courses, the speech you so carefully rehearsed is forgotten.
