Founded in Paris, Borneo was born from its creator’s desire—raised in Uruguay—to rediscover in clothing that very specific feeling of summers that stay with us. The name itself comes from borneo, a Spanish nautical term for the swinging of a boat pivoting around its anchor: a beautiful metaphor for a brand anchored in its roots, yet designed to move.
After an initial launch attempt in 2019, the project came back to life following a conversation in Cassis. Since then, the collections have been developed in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, in small runs, around feminine, graphic, and subtly retro silhouettes. Particular attention is paid to fabrics and the longevity of the garments; the house also works on reclaiming and recycling its swimwear at the end of its life cycle.
But Borneo also captures our interest for a much more everyday reason: swimwear has long since departed the sole geography of holidays. In Paris, it is now slipped into a bag for a few laps before the office, an afternoon at the spa, or an hour under the glass roof of a hotel pool. The pool at La Fondation, with its 25-meter lane, sauna, and hammam, is almost the perfect illustration.
