At the table, as in love, variety is key. In the beginning, J.J. Martin never even intended to launch a fashion brand. An American journalist based in Milan, she started La DoubleJ in 2015 as a shoppable magazine celebrating the city’s creative women, curated alongside vintage clothing and jewelry.
Vintage prints soon became her obsession, and by 2017, they had leaped from dresses to the dining room. For her debut tableware collection, J.J. mined the archives of the historic silk house Mantero, pairing motifs separated by up to two centuries—from 18th-century illustrations and retro florals to 1970s geometrics.
To this day, DoubleJ suggests mixing its printed porcelain with the white plates you already own. J.J. herself sets the table using her grandparents’ vintage silverware.
Behind this joyful chaos lies a highly disciplined craft. The porcelain is produced in Verona by Ancap, a manufacture founded in 1964: fired at exactly 1,410°C before artisans hand-apply the 18-karat gold gilded rims on many of the designs. The glassware, meanwhile, is handblown in Murano by Salviati.
