I believe many of us live lives we never truly chose. We are spoon-fed words like “compromise,” “realism,” “common sense,” “letting go,” “acceptance,” “it could be worse,” “you can’t have it all.” Nothing inherently wrong with that, I must say.
These words are small boxes—convenient, tightly shut—where we tuck away everything we dare not voice. Doubts, fears, ambitions, old wounds. We stack them high and call it wisdom.
Yet what happens when the boxes are full? You seek higher ground. At an altitude of 1,100 meters, in the village of Valdeblore, Auberge de la Roche nurtures mountain hospitality: few rooms, vast nature, good food, deep sleep. Up here, the little boxes open on their own. You sift through them. What belongs to others, you leave behind. What is yours, you reclaim. All that remains is a handful of your own quiet truths. It is little, yet entirely enough.

The stay for two includes the night, the “Carte Blanche” dinner, breakfast, and, above all, access to the outdoor bath area, open year-round: two pools—one hot, one cold—a sauna, and a cozy lounge warmed by a wood stove. The experience is currently offered at €515 for a room or €550 for a suite, for two guests. The next day, the inn can even prepare a takeaway picnic to carry your wanderings deeper into the Mercantour.
At the table, chefs Louis-Philippe Riel and Lea Widmer work in intimate step with their surroundings. The kitchen moves to the rhythm of local growers, breeders, neighboring farms, and, come summer, the inn’s own kitchen garden.
