A dermatologist mother’s custom formulas, tested by her own daughters.

In the 2000s, Sylvie, a dermatologist, began crafting her own bespoke formulas in her pharmacy. At home, her daughter Anne was her very first tester. Years later, after opening the first Alaena Spa in Biarritz with her surgeon father, Anne returned to her mother with a vision: what if these preparations became a true skincare line? Even the name was already a family keepsake: Alaena brings together the names of the three sisters—Alaia, Hélène, and Anne.

In the Peres family, skin was a topic of conversation long before there was ever a brand. Sylvie is a dermatologist, Jean-Marc a plastic surgeon, and their three daughters grew up with their mother's custom-made preparations for her patients lining the bathroom shelves. In the early 2000s, Sylvie began compounding her own formulas in the pharmacy, determined to weed out ingredients she deemed problematic. Anne became one of her very first testers at home. Meanwhile, Anne went off to study at Centrale Paris before joining her father in Biarritz, where he was designing a spa adjacent to his practice to care for patients before and after surgery. The Alaena Spa opened its doors in 2015; its name, a fatherly invention, woven from the names of his three daughters: Alaia, Hélène, and Anne.

It was there that Anne realized her mother’s little jars of cream could have a life beyond the family circle. She suggested turning them into a skincare line. Working from those original preparations, they spent several years refining the formulas, finally launching the range in 2018. Since then, the family story has evolved into a full-fledged laboratory: Alaena has developed a patented active ingredient derived from five sprouted seeds, while their skincare line is produced in the Southwest of France. In the end, the girls were right to nose around their mother's bathroom.
